You Beta Believe It! Esmolol for Refractory Ventricular Fibrillation
More than 350,000 episodes of cardiac arrest occur outside of a hospital each year in the US, and recent studies report only a 10% rate of survival to hospital discharge. Pharmacists are crucial team members of advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) during resuscitation events and institutional policy implementation. Although the ACLS algorithm is written to be followed without deviation, there are controversies regarding options to treat refractory episodes of cardiac arrest. Given the poor survival rates of cardiac arrest, it is reasonable for pharmacists to understand the evidence for use of pharmacologic agents outside of the standard ACLS algorithm to improve patient outcomes.
