A Hard Pill to Swallow: Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose and Toxicity Management
Calcium channel blockers are among the most commonly used cardiovascular medications in adults. The American Association of Poison Control Centers (2011) reported 11,764 Calcium Channel Blocker overdoses in adults, second only to beta blockers. The University of Maryland Medical Center guideline for management of beta blocker and calcium channel blocker overdose has been updated within the past year and has become a system-wide guideline. Additionally, pharmacists should understand the role of high dose insulin euglycemia which is specific to the management of calcium channel blocker toxicity.
