Who Checks the Checker? Integrating Pharmacy Technician Product Verification in Health Systems

The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is implementing a Validated Pharmacy Technician (VPhT) or Tech-Check-Tech (TCT) program to allow trained pharmacy technicians to perform final product verifications of select medications per COMAR 10.34.34.04. Currently, pharmacists complete all final checks, limiting time for clinical care, while technicians have limited advancement opportunities. The desired state is to empower validated technicians to perform final product verifications accurately, enabling pharmacists to focus on more patient-centered services and improving overall workflow efficiency. Gaps exist in policy development, formal training and validation processes, technology integration for tracking and audits, cultural acceptance among pharmacists, and defined career ladders for technicians. Addressing these through structured education, regulatory alignment, automated audit systems, and recognition pathways will enhance operational efficiency, medication safety, and professional growth within UMMC’s pharmacy practice model.
